Project

Democracy in Verse

This project “Democracy in Verse: Women Poets and Networks of Resistance under the Franco Regime” explores how democratic values were preserved and promoted through cultural practices under authoritarian regimes, with a specific focus on acts of resistance carried out by women poets during the Franco dictatorship (1939-1975) in Spain. It aims to analyze their involvement in social movements and literary forums understood as networks of resistance, public interventions in the press, poetic production, and editorial initiatives, in order to understand how these authors sustained alternative political and literary practices opposing the regime’s official discourse.

The research is situated at the intersection of cultural studies and the sociology of literature. The analysis will focus on three key areas:

  1. Networks of resistance

Participation in networks of resistance, including social movements and literary forums.

  2. Poetry and public discourse

Poetic production and public discourse in newspapers.

  3. Censorship

    The impact of censorship.

The project seeks not only to shed light on the artistic and political resistance of these women under Francoism but also to contribute to developing analytical tools for studying marginal or silenced cultural productions as spaces of democratic resistance.
